Subject: winter landscape

Support and technique: watercolour on cardboard. Made with the "frost technique" to obtain the ice effect in some areas of the pictorial surface, such technique consisted of placing the painting in the actual cold still fresh and then processed later. This effect was created by the painter Pancaldi and occurs above all in many of his works in the maturity phase.

Author: Gaetano Pancaldi (Piumazzo di Castelfranco Emilia, 1922-2014).
There representation of nature and everyday life were among the favorite subjects of the artist who was very active and well-known in the Modena area due to his activity as a poster designer for the Communist Party of Modena and the numerous exhibitions held. Painter tireless, Pancaldi has worked with unchanged until recent years passion.

Medium and painting surface: watercolor on paper painted with "Ice technique" that was invented by Pancaldi to obtain the ice effect in some part of the painting surface, this technique consists of literally freezing the fresh wet painting and subsequently work on it again. He used this technique starting from the early '60's and kept working on it for all his life until the extraordinary results of the 80's and 90's ice paintings.

Artist: Gaetano Pancaldi (1922-2014), painter from Piumazzo di Castelfranco Emilia in Modena province in the north of Italy. He was very popular in his area because of his many exhibitions and works for the local communist party. Biography available on internet or upon request.
