Author: Antonio Bueno (Berlin, 21 July 1918 – Fiesole, 26 September 1984) was an Italian painter of Spanish origins. Born in Germany while his father was a Berlin correspondent for Madrid's ABC newspaper, he obtained Italian citizenship in 1970.
He carried out his artistic studies in Spain and Switzerland. In 1937 he was in Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon des Jeunes; then in 1940 with his brother Xavier, he moved to Italy. After a post-impressionist experience, in the immediate post-war period he joined Gregorio Sciltian's lesson by performing trompe-l'œil works and, with Annigoni and his brother, participated in the "Modern Painters of Reality" group. An avid and restless experimenter, after these experiences he carried out numerous research: abstract painter (1950-53) in conjunction with his work as secretary at the Numero magazine; neometaphysical with the series of paintings with chalk pipes (1953-57); realist; materialistic in the wake of the Informal with a series of imprints (1960-62); signal and pop in the mid-sixties; neodada and visual painter. In the eclecticism of his production, his figures of busts and rounded heads, boys in sailor suits, firefighters, reinterpretations of great works of art history, with rounded, simplified and neotenic characteristics, remain known to the general public.
Bueno's definitive consecration at the 1984 Venice Biennale, just a few months before his death, when he was already seriously ill: at the exhibition he presented a series of works that undoubtedly represent the pinnacle of all his artistic production of his mature era.
