DESCRIPTION / DESCRIPTION

Antique print from a mail order catalog of the Bocconi brothers' "Alle città d'Italia" department store.

A brief history of the first Italian department stores "Alle città d'Italia"

1877. The Bocconi brothers inaugurate, at the Hotel Confortable, the Aux Villes d'Italie department store, the first in Italy, on the model of Le Bon Marché by Aristide Boucicaut (1852), made famous by Emile Zola in the novel Au Bonheur des Dames (1883). In 1880 the sign became Alle città d'Italia. In 1887 the new headquarters in Rome Piazza Colonna opened based on a design by Giulio De Angelis and in 1889 the new headquarters in Milan Piazza Duomo designed by Giovanni Giachi.

1917. Magazzini Bocconi is sold to Senatore Borletti, who entrusts Gabriele D'Annunzio with the idea of the name. This is how the company called Rinascente was born, which was officially registered on 27 September 1917. On 7 December 1918 Rinascente opened to the public in the building in Piazza del Duomo. A few days after the inauguration, the building was destroyed by fire. Between 1919 and 1920 the branches in Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples and Palermo reopened and were renovated.

The mail order catalogs of the warehouses in the cities of Italy by the Bocconi brothers were published and sent every two months. THE the most important numbers were those of April and October, which they advertised the season's collections respectively spring/summer and autumn/winter season. The other numbers were dedicated to periodic events - the end-of-season sales, the "white fair", Christmas presents - or specific products such as underwear, home and furnishing fabrics.
